Walking & Strolling.

The Waterfront Heritage Trail runs roughly 6 km of 3-metre-wide asphalt along Kempenfelt Bay from White Oaks Road to Penetanguishene Road, threading 11 interpretive stations through the heart of Barrie's downtown waterfront. The walk passes Centennial Beach, Heritage Park with the Spirit Catcher sculpture, Allandale Station Park, and the Bayfield Basin Marina — a flat, accessible ribbon along the western end of Lake Simcoe.

Walking & Strolling in Barrie
01 — What to know

The brief.

Most of the central Barrie walking is flat, paved or boardwalked, and concentrated on the Kempenfelt Bay waterfront ribbon. The Waterfront Heritage Trail is open year-round and wheelchair accessible; the parallel North Shore Trail adds a 4-metre-wide crushed-stone option on the bay's north shore on a former rail corridor, with parking at Heritage Park and Johnson's Beach.

The chain links 14 named municipal waterfront parks — Centennial, Heritage, Tyndale, Minet's Point, Johnson's Beach, Allandale Station, Kempenfelt Park, Military Heritage Park, Will Dwyer Park, Sam Cancilla, South Shore Park, Tollendale Woods, Pioneer, and the Gables — and the Spirit Catcher sculpture and Sea Serpent installation are the two anchor public-art pieces. May through October is the easiest window; the paved Heritage Trail stays walkable through winter.
