Hiking.
Ardagh Bluffs Natural Area covers 518 acres of protected forest in southwest Barrie with over 17 kilometres of earthen trails inside city limits — large enough to anchor day hiking inside an Ontario city and structured around four main trail systems marked by coloured squares, with secondary loops marked by triangles and circles. Parking is at the Peggy Hill Team Community Centre across from the Central Creek trailhead.
The brief.
Ardagh trails are earthen and not wheelchair accessible — the system carries real elevation across kames and end-moraine terrain. Motorized vehicles are prohibited, so the trails stay quiet for foot traffic.
Inside the rest of the city, Sunnidale Park is the largest municipal park and a milder day-hike option, with the 15.5-acre Wyman Jacques Arboretum on the north side; trail connections lead west to the Sandy Hollow Buffer and Lampman Park. Beacon Glen Trails add a short steep loop with four lookouts and 28.5 metres of elevation change.
The Nine Mile Portage Heritage Trail follows the historic First Nations and fur-trade portage out of downtown west toward Fort Willow in the adjacent Springwater Township. Best season is April through November; Sunnidale Park and Ardagh's wider trails stay walkable through winter.
