Sailing & Boating.

Kempenfelt Bay's 14.5-kilometre length and 41.5-metre depth carry the Lake Simcoe sailing centre — two yacht clubs operate on the bay, the Barrie Municipal Marina is the full-service home base, and the Lake Simcoe Interclub Series ties club racing across the lake. Barrie Yacht Club hosts the largest sailing school on Lake Simcoe.

01 — What to know

The brief.

Two distinct yacht clubs run on the bay: Barrie Yacht Club has its own grounds and runs the LSIS and the largest Lake Simcoe sailing school, while Kempenfelt Bay Yacht Club is based at the Barrie Municipal Marina downtown. The Municipal Marina is the full-service home port; the Bayfield Basin Transient Marina handles short-stay slips beside Heritage Park; and the Tiffin Boat Launch is the public ramp.

The bay's protected geometry shelters the western end while opening toward Lake Simcoe's open water for the longer racing courses. May through October is the standard sailing window; ice forms on the bay later than on shallower Lake Simcoe sections, but the bay does freeze in most winters.
