Geology & Discovery.
Flowerpot Island — 6.5 km off Tobermory in Fathom Five National Marine Park — is named for two limestone sea stacks on its eastern shoreline, erosional pillars formed by differential weathering of the Niagara Escarpment dolostone. The Grotto sea cave at the base of the escarpment cliff inside Bruce Peninsula NP is the karst counterpoint, and fossil-bearing limestone exposures along the Georgian Bay shoreline carry marine fossils from the escarpment's sedimentary bedrock.
The brief.
The Niagara Escarpment reaches its dramatic northern terminus at Tobermory — dolostone cliffs over Georgian Bay up to 61 m above water along the Bruce Peninsula NP coast. Flowerpot Island is reached only by tour boat (or advanced sea kayak); the interior loop trail passes the Flowerpots, Marl Cave, and the Flowerpot Island Lightstation.
The Grotto sits inside Bruce Peninsula NP and is reached via the Cyprus Lake parking lots — advance vehicle reservation required May 1 – October 31. Fossil collecting is regulated inside the national parks; observation only on park land.
The working window is May through October when boat tours and trails are running.
