Walking & Strolling.
The Avon River park system runs riverside through the centre of Stratford — Lower Queen's Park, Upper Queen's Park, Confederation Park, and North Shore Park — threading the Stratford Festival's Festival Theatre grounds and the Shakespearean Gardens along the dammed Lake Victoria stretch of the river. T.J.
Dolan Natural Area extends the walking ribbon west on a riverside woodland loop, and the 19th-century limestone heritage downtown core, anchored by the Avon Theatre on Downie Street, is walkable from the riverside parks.
The brief.
Most of the central Stratford walking is flat, paved or grass-surfaced, and concentrated on the Avon River park system between Upper Queen's Park, the Festival Theatre grounds, the Shakespearean Gardens, and Confederation Park. The dammed Lake Victoria stretch keeps the river calm and lake-like through the downtown reach.
The Avon River park system stays accessible year-round; spring-through-fall is the most comfortable walking window and aligns with the Festival's programmed April-through-October season. The 19th-century limestone heritage downtown core sits a short walk inland from the river parks.
T.J. Dolan Natural Area, on the west side of the city, picks up a riverside woodland walk on Carolinian-fringe terrain — a quieter alternative to the central park ribbon.
