01 — Abstract

Stratford sits on the Avon River in Perth County, where the dammed river widens into Lake Victoria and runs through a connected park system — Lower Queen's Park, Upper Queen's Park, Confederation Park, North Shore Park, and the riverside Festival Theatre grounds — that threads the centre of the city. The Stratford Festival, founded in 1952 by local journalist Tom Patterson, programs four purpose-built venues from April through October: the Festival Theatre with its thrust stage on the north shore of the Avon, the Tom Patterson Theatre on the waterfront, the Avon Theatre on Downie Street, and the smaller Studio Theatre.

Beyond the festival cluster, T.J. Dolan Natural Area carries a riverside woodland loop on the city's west side, the Avon Trail Association's long-distance route runs through town from St.

Marys toward Conestogo, and the 132 km Goderich to Guelph Rail Trail connects Perth County into the Trans Canada Trail. Stratford is a short drive from Kitchener-Waterloo and London via the Highway 7/8 corridor, and a couple of hours from Toronto.

The city sits on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Attawandaron Peoples, governed by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum (1701) and the Huron Tract Treaty (1827).

Hiking

The Avon Trail Association's long-distance route runs through Stratford from St. Marys (where it joins the Thames Valley Trail) toward Conestogo (where it meets the Grand Valley Trail), with a Stratford Side Trail tracing the length of the Avon River through the city. T.J. Dolan Natural Area carries a riverside loop on Carolinian-fringe woodland on the city's west side, with side trails ranging from short walks to a longer loop. Wildwood Conservation Area, on UTRCA-managed land near St. Marys, adds a regional trail network — the closest large outdoor anchor to Stratford.

Walking & Strolling

The Avon River park system runs riverside through the centre of the city — Lower Queen's Park, Upper Queen's Park, Confederation Park, and North Shore Park — threading the Festival Theatre grounds and the Shakespearean Gardens along Lake Victoria's calm dammed shoreline. T.J. Dolan Natural Area extends the walking ribbon west on a riverside woodland loop. The 19th-century limestone heritage downtown core, anchored by the Avon Theatre on Downie Street, is walkable from the riverside parks.

Cycling

Stratford is a node on the 132 km Goderich to Guelph (G2G) Rail Trail, a multi-use greenway built on an abandoned railway right-of-way that has been welcomed in its entirety to the Trans Canada Trail. The riverside Avon park paths add a downtown, family-friendly cycling ribbon on the dammed Lake Victoria stretch. Wildwood Conservation Area’s trail network on UTRCA land near St. Marys carries off-road cycling close to the city.

Paddling — Flatwater

The Avon River widens into Lake Victoria as it runs through downtown Stratford — a calm, dammed flatwater stretch about two kilometres long that is paddleable on a canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard, with riverside boating concession on the Queen's Park side. Wildwood Reservoir, managed by UTRCA on the upper Thames near St. Marys, adds a larger flatwater body within easy reach of the city, with sailing, swimming, and small-boat use alongside paddling.

Heritage & Culture

The Stratford Festival, founded in 1952 by local journalist Tom Patterson, runs across four purpose-built venues from April through October — the Festival Theatre with its famous thrust stage on the north shore of the Avon River, the Tom Patterson Theatre on the waterfront, the Avon Theatre on Downie Street, and the smaller Studio Theatre. Around the festival cluster, the Avon River park system threads the Festival Theatre grounds, the Shakespearean Gardens, and the 19th-century limestone heritage downtown. Mute swans have been raised on the Avon since 1918 and remain a Stratford fixture each spring.
