Heritage & Culture.
Two Parks Canada heritage canal components sit inside Quinte West — Trent–Severn Lock 1 in Trenton, the eastern entry of the 386 km waterway, and the Murray Canal between the Bay of Quinte and Presqu'ile Bay, built 1882–1889. Five kilometres east, the National Air Force Museum of Canada at 8 Wing / CFB Trenton houses Canada's national air force collection plus the outdoor RCAF Memorial Air Park with more than 25 aircraft on display.
The brief.
Trent–Severn Lock 1 is an operating Parks Canada lockstation on the Trent River in downtown Trenton — the lock grounds are open to the public during the navigation season (roughly mid-May through mid-October), and visitors can watch boats lock through at the start of the 386 km Trent–Severn Waterway. The Murray Canal, an 8 km cut west of Trenton with staffed swing bridges at Carrying Place and Brighton Road, is also part of the Trent–Severn Waterway National Historic Site and operates on the same Parks Canada navigation-season schedule.
The National Air Force Museum of Canada is open year-round; the indoor museum is by-donation, and the outdoor RCAF Memorial Air Park is free and walkable through the full Royal Canadian Air Force era of more than 25 aircraft. 8 Wing is the RCAF's largest base — the air mobility command flies CC-130J Hercules and CC-177 Globemaster III out of Trenton.
