01 — What to know

The brief.

The IBA was designated by BirdLife International in 1998. The Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area was federally designated in 1980 specifically to protect migratory landbirds; only non-disruptive day-use activities (birding, hiking, photography) are permitted, and commercial activities require a permit.

PEPtBO at 6056 Long Point Road is the practical interpretation hub, with the Spring Birding Festival and Starry Nights with Saw-whets owl-banding programme as the marquee public events. Monarch Point Conservation Reserve is non-operating Crown land — no marked trails, low-impact day use only — and protects Blanding's turtle and Henslow's sparrow among at-risk species.

Macaulay Mountain Conservation Area east of Picton, managed by Quinte Conservation, layers in inland forest trails.
