Indigenous Experiences.
Petroglyphs Provincial Park — Kinomāgewapkong, "the rocks that teach" — sits about 55 km north of Peterborough in Douro–Dummer Township, near McGinnis Lake. The park is co-stewarded with Curve Lake First Nation and protects what Ontario Parks describes as the largest known concentration of ancient Indigenous rock carvings in Canada — approximately 900 figures on a single marble outcrop, housed inside a protective glass-walled building.
The brief.
The petroglyphs are a sacred site; visitors must not touch the carvings, and photography of the petroglyphs themselves is prohibited under the protocol set by Curve Lake First Nation in partnership with Ontario Parks. The park is open mid-May through Thanksgiving (October); access is by car.
The Whetung Ojibwa Centre at Curve Lake First Nation, north of Peterborough, is a long-running Mississauga Anishinaabeg gallery and cultural centre and is open year-round. Trent University's Nogojiwanong campus has hosted the oldest Indigenous Studies department in Canada since 1969 and includes the First Peoples House of Learning.
Peterborough sits on the traditional territory of the Mississauga Anishinaabeg.
