Geology & Discovery.

Warsaw Caves Conservation Area — about 25 km northeast of Peterborough in Douro–Dummer Township — protects seven explorable caves and an Indian-River-cut karst landscape on the southern edge of the Canadian Shield. The kettle-hole formations and cave entrances sit close to the river; ORCA's 15 km of trails carry walkers past the cave system and the Indian River bend.

The brief.

The caves are at-your-own-risk exploration. ORCA recommends two flashlights, a helmet, and sturdy footwear; some caves close seasonally for bat hibernation.

The site is the closest accessible cave-exploration system to the GTA — a karst exposure on the southern Shield fringe — and is paired on-site with above-ground hiking and frontcountry camping. Best season is May through October; bat-hibernation closures typically run through winter into spring.

Peterborough is the gateway city for visitors heading to Warsaw Caves, but the site itself is in adjacent Douro–Dummer Township.
