Snow Adventure.
The Rideau Canal Skateway runs 7.8 km of outdoor skating right through downtown Ottawa on the Parks Canada–managed UNESCO World Heritage waterway — free, open 24 hours when ice conditions allow, NCC-maintained by ice teams that read the canal before each daily decision. Average season is around 50 days; the record season in 1971–72 ran 90.
The brief.
The Skateway opening is condition-dependent and announced by the NCC each winter; closures and partial-rink openings are common through the season. Parks Canada drains the canal at the Ottawa Locks in mid-October to set up for the Skateway and refills it in mid-November.
Beyond the Skateway, the NCC Greenbelt grooms 100+ km of multi-use winter trail for shared snowshoeing, fat-biking, and hiking, with separate mechanically groomed classic XC track (covered in the Cross-Country & Nordic sub-guide). Mer Bleue's perimeter trails carry winter snowshoe traffic through the bog.
Skateway use is free; Greenbelt winter trails are NCC-managed and free to access.
