Ottawa.
Ottawa sits on the Ontario shore of the Ottawa River, with the Rideau River and Rideau Canal cutting south through the city to Mooney's Bay. The National Capital Commission manages the Greenbelt — a roughly 200 square kilometre arc of farm, forest, wetland, and trail at the city's edge — plus the 236 km Capital Pathway that links the Ottawa River shoreline, the Rideau River, and the Rideau Canal into a single multi-use network.
Inside the Greenbelt, Mer Bleue protects 3,500 hectares of sphagnum bog (a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance since 1995), Stony Swamp carries 40+ km of trails, Pinhey Forest holds the area's only inland sand-dune system, and Shirley's Bay has 270+ recorded bird species. Through downtown, the Rideau Canal — a Parks Canada–managed UNESCO World Heritage Site — runs as a 7.8 km outdoor skating surface for roughly 50 days a winter when conditions allow.
The city sits on the unceded traditional territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe Nation, two hours from Montreal and a four-and-a-half-hour drive from Toronto.

Walking & Strolling
The Rideau Canal pathways link Confederation Park to Hartwells Locks and Hog's Back along the Parks Canada heritage waterway, and Confederation Boulevard runs the federal ceremonial route past Parliament Hill, the ByWard Market, and the museum precinct. On the Ottawa River, the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway / Kichi Zībī Mīkan pathway extends west from downtown along the shoreline. The continuous NCC pathway and ceremonial-route infrastructure makes for hours of walking without leaving the network.

Mer Bleue Conservation Area protects a 3,500-hectare sphagnum bog roughly 7,700 years old — designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 1995 and the largest bog and natural area in the National Capital Region. A 1.2 km boardwalk loop runs out into the bog. Shirley's Bay on the northwestern edge of the Greenbelt has 270+ recorded bird species; Stony Swamp carries 40+ km of trails through maple forest and beaver ponds; and Pinhey Forest holds the area's only inland sand-dune system. The Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club maintains the canonical regional birding-hotspot inventory.

The Capital Pathway is a 236 km multi-use paved pathway network managed by the federal National Capital Commission, with the Ottawa River shoreline, the Rideau River, the Rideau Canal, and the Greenbelt all interconnected. The Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway / Kichi Zībī Mīkan pathway runs west out of downtown along the river. Out at the city edge, Greenbelt Pathway West (10.4 km) and Watts Creek Pathway (9.3 km, part of the Great Trail) tie into the Greenbelt cycling loops.

The Champlain Bridge wave — known locally as "the Wall" — is a standing wave off Bate Island formed by spring runoff on the Ottawa River, used by freestyle whitewater kayakers and river surfers from late April through early June. As Ottawa River flows drop through summer, the secondary Sewer wave becomes the working feature. Both are urban, in-city features visible from the bridge.

The Champlain Bridge wave off Bate Island is a permanent standing river wave inside the urban core — one of a small handful of Canadian cities with a documented river-surf scene. The wave depends on Ottawa River flow and peaks during spring runoff; the lower-water Sewer wave carries the surf scene through summer. Surfing here is single-feature and seasonal, but recurring.

The Rideau River and Rideau Canal corridor through the city falls within Fisheries Management Zone 18 — smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, walleye, muskellunge, yellow perch, and black crappie. The Ottawa River within the National Capital Region falls within FMZ 12, with walleye, pike, bass, and muskellunge at larger river scale. Mooney's Bay on the Rideau River is a well-used urban shore-fishing access. Anglers fishing from the Quebec shore of the Ottawa River need a Quebec licence.

The NCC Greenbelt holds 21+ km of mechanically groomed classic cross-country ski trail and 100+ km of groomed multi-use winter trail (snowshoe, fat bike, hike). Greenbelt Pathway West (10.4 km) and Watts Creek Pathway (9.3 km, part of the Great Trail) are the longer classic-track routes; Mer Bleue carries XC and snowshoe trails through the bog. A substantial in-city Nordic network for a major city.

The Rideau Canal Skateway is 7.8 km of outdoor skating on the Parks Canada–managed UNESCO World Heritage waterway through downtown — free, 24-hour access when ice conditions allow, NCC-maintained. The average skating season is roughly 50 days; the record season (1971–72) ran 90. Parks Canada drains the canal in mid-October and refills it in mid-November to set up the surface. Beyond the Skateway, the Greenbelt holds 100+ km of groomed multi-use winter trail for snowshoeing and fat-biking, plus the Mer Bleue winter trails through the bog.
