Heritage & Culture.

Two National Historic Sites cluster in Old Town: Fort George NHS, the principal British post on the Niagara frontier in the War of 1812, and Butler's Barracks NHS, used from the War of 1812 through the Second World War. Brock's Monument at Queenston Heights stands on the site of the 1812 Battle of Queenston Heights, with Major-General Sir Isaac Brock interred at its base — the heritage corridor stretches roughly 12 km from Old Town to Queenston.

01 — What to know

The brief.

Fort George NHS is the headline visit; Parks Canada operates it on a seasonal calendar with the gates and interior buildings typically open May through October and the visitor programming concentrated in that window. Butler's Barracks grounds are open year-round at no charge, even when the interior interpretation is closed.

Mackenzie Printery (the print shop where William Lyon Mackenzie produced the Colonial Advocate) and Laura Secord Homestead (restored home of Laura Secord, who carried warning of an American attack in 1813) are at Queenston, operated by Niagara Parks. Navy Hall sits on the Old Town waterfront beside Fort George, also Parks Canada.

The cluster is walkable in Old Town and a short drive to Queenston.
