The 53 km Niagara River Recreation Trail leaves Old Town at Fort George National Historic Site and follows the Niagara Parkway south past Queenston Heights to Fort Erie; the iconic NOTL-to-Niagara-Falls northern stretch is among the most-recognized recreational rides in southern Ontario. Inland, the 14 km Upper Canada Heritage Trail traces a former Erie & Ontario Railway right-of-way from town through Virgil to St.

Davids, and the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail runs the Lake Ontario shoreline along Lakeshore Road. Queenston Heights is the southern terminus of the Bruce Trail; Fort George, Butler's Barracks, Brock's Monument, and the Mackenzie Printery and Laura Secord Homestead at Queenston cluster a War of 1812 heritage corridor inside roughly an hour and a half of Toronto via the QEW.

The town sits within the treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation; the Haudenosaunee (Six Nations of the Grand River) also have historical connection to the broader Niagara Peninsula.
