Hiking.
The Niagara Glen Nature Reserve is the only legal access to the Niagara Gorge floor on the Canadian side. Stairways descend from the Niagara Glen Nature Centre at 3050 Niagara Parkway, and the trails — Terrace, Cobblestone, Trillium and Whirlpool — total about 4 km through Carolinian forest, past glacial geology and the Whirlpool reach of the lower Niagara.
The Bruce Trail's Niagara Section traverses the Glen as part of its 80.5 km Queenston → Grimsby leg.
The brief.
The Glen's trails are rugged: steep cliffs, rough surface, slippery rocks, loose rocks overhead and fast-running water. Trail difficulty ranges from moderate to difficult, requiring basic to advanced hiking experience.
Hiking is permitted only between sunrise and sunset — tree canopy and gorge elevation make conditions darker sooner than expected, so check Niagara Parks for monthly sunrise/sunset times. Stay on marked trails; off-trail "spider trails" damage the Carolinian-forest plant communities and jeopardize the bouldering access agreement at the same site.
Approximate visit time is 60 minutes per loop, more depending on which trails you stitch together. The Terrace and Whirlpool sections are seasonally closed for maintenance.
Best season is April through November when the Nature Centre is open; the trails themselves are open year-round but icy November through March.
