Madawaska Valley.
Madawaska Valley is a rural Renfrew County township anchored by Barry's Bay at the north end of Kamaniskeg Lake, Combermere at the southern end where the Madawaska River exits the lake, and Wilno on Highway 60 — founded in 1858 as Canada's first Polish settlement. St.
Mary's Church on the Wilno hilltop is the visual centre of Polish Kashub heritage in Canada, with the Wilno Heritage Park interpreting the immigration story in the hamlet below. South at Combermere, Madonna House (founded 1947 by Catherine Doherty) runs as a Catholic lay community and active pilgrimage destination with a public chapel, gift shop, and gardens.
The township sits immediately east of Algonquin Provincial Park's eastern boundary — Barry's Bay is the closest service town for east-side park access on Highway 60, with outfitting, groceries, and fuel. In-municipality water is the upper Madawaska River system: Bark Lake (a managed reservoir on the Madawaska, controlled by an Ontario Power Generation dam at its south end) and the long north-south Kamaniskeg Lake supply paddling, fishing, sailing, and houseboating; FMZ 15 lake trout, walleye, smallmouth bass, and pike fisheries run across the lake system.
The famous Madawaska whitewater (Palmer Rapids, Madawaska River Provincial Park) sits downstream in adjacent municipality and is out of strict in-township scope.

Paddling — Flatwater
The in-municipality water is the upper Madawaska River system: Bark Lake in the western half of the township is a managed reservoir on the Madawaska — a long, irregular lake controlled by an Ontario Power Generation dam at the south end and quiet enough for multi-day flatwater trips. Kamaniskeg Lake runs roughly 25 km north-south from Barry's Bay to Combermere with the Madawaska entering at the north and exiting at the south, and supplies the obvious flatwater paddle through the township centre. Smaller in-township lakes — Aylen, Carson, Trout — add quieter alternatives. The famous Madawaska whitewater (Palmer Rapids, Madawaska River Provincial Park) sits downstream of Bark Lake's dam in adjacent municipality and is out of in-township scope; the upstream water in Madawaska Valley is reservoir and lake paddling rather than rapids.

Kamaniskeg Lake's ~25 km north-south length supports cottage sailing and motor-boating, with public access at Barry's Bay (north end) and Combermere (south end). Bark Lake's reservoir water is wider and more open at the houseboat scale; the lake is large enough for multi-day houseboating runs and is one of the township's distinctive water-based draws. Aylen Lake in the northwest adds a smaller motor-boating water on the Algonquin side of the township. All three are managed under standard Transport Canada small-vessel rules; the OPG dam at Bark Lake's south end can shift reservoir levels seasonally.

Madawaska Valley sits in Ontario Fisheries Management Zone 15, with Bark Lake, Kamaniskeg Lake, the upper Madawaska River, and Aylen Lake carrying lake trout in the cold deep basins, walleye and smallmouth bass through the warmer water, and northern pike across the lake system. Bark Lake's reservoir water and Kamaniskeg's deeper north basin are the two main lake-trout waters; smallmouth and walleye fisheries run through both lakes plus the river. FMZ 15 sits within Ontario's Central Bait Management Zone, so live or dead baitfish and leeches may not be transported into or out of the zone; Ontario fishing licences are required across all waters.

Three layered heritage anchors run through the township. Wilno, on Highway 60 about 10 km west of Barry's Bay, was founded in 1858 as Canada's first Polish settlement; St. Mary's Church on the hilltop above the hamlet is the visual centre of Polish Kashub heritage in Canada, and Wilno Heritage Park below the church interprets the immigration story. South at Combermere, Madonna House runs as a Catholic lay apostolate community founded in 1947 by Catherine Doherty — an active pilgrimage destination with a public chapel, gift shop, museum, and gardens. In Barry's Bay, the Railway Station Museum preserves a former Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway station, and Zurakowski Park on the Kamaniskeg waterfront is named for Polish-born CF-105 Avro Arrow test pilot Janusz Żurakowski, who lived in Barry's Bay. All three sit inside the township.
