Nature & Discovery.

Kingston Field Naturalists curates the Amherst Island birding inventory — a multi-decade hotspot record that anchors Owl Woods for wintering Northern Saw-whet Owl and Long-eared Owl, the open island farmland for Snowy Owl, Short-eared Owl, Rough-legged Hawk, and Northern Harrier, and the Stella harbour for waterfowl and shoreline species. The crossing is the M/V Frontenac II from Millhaven, twenty minutes each way.

01 — What to know

The brief.

The Amherst Island birding window runs late autumn through early spring — November through March for the wintering owl and raptor concentrations, with peak January–February. Owl Woods is privately owned and accessed under a long-standing landowner agreement; visitors must follow the kiosk code of ethics, must not report sightings on social media or eBird until the season is over, and must respect the annual November deer-hunt closure.

On the mainland, Parrott's Bay Conservation Area's 6 km of trails carries an osprey nesting platform at the marsh boardwalk and forest birds through spring and fall migration; CRCA hours are 7:30 a.m. to dusk daily. The Kingston Field Naturalists' Amherst Island site guide is the reference document and pairs with the Naturally Lennox & Addington bird-watching page for visitor framing.
