Sailing & Boating.

The Bluewater Marina sits inside the natural sheltered harbour at the mouth of the Bayfield River — the same harbour that became a port of entry between Detroit and Goderich by 1869, with the permanent harbour built in the 1870s. From the marina, recreational sailors and powerboaters run out into the Lake Huron main basin and along the Bluewater Highway shoreline north toward Goderich and south toward Grand Bend.

01 — What to know

The brief.

The Bluewater Marina is inside Bayfield's working harbour — sheltered from the prevailing southwest Lake Huron wind by the river-mouth geometry. Open-water sailing season runs roughly May through October on Lake Huron's main basin.

The Lake Huron main basin (FMZ 13) is exposed water with limited shelter outside the harbour mouth, and weather can build quickly off the open lake. The harbour, the Pier Beach, and Pioneer Park on the bluff above all sit on a short walking loop, so launch logistics and shore-side amenities are concentrated.

Canoe, kayak, and paddleboard rentals are available out of the marina on a first-come basis.
