Paddling — Flatwater.

The Welland International Flatwater Centre runs on the bypassed downtown stretch of the Welland Canal — a straight, sheltered, lane-marked flatwater course in the centre of the city. It hosts sprint canoe/kayak, rowing, and dragon-boat racing and training, and opens to public paddlers outside posted regatta and training blocks.

Most Canadian cities don't have a purpose-built flatwater venue running through downtown.

01 — What to know

The brief.

The course is the old Welland Canal route through the city, bypassed in 1973 when the active Welland Ship Canal was rerouted east. The water is flat, sheltered from open-lake wind, and lane-marked for sprint racing — which makes it good for skill-building paddlers as well as racers.

Public paddling lanes are available outside posted regatta blocks; check the Welland International Flatwater Centre's calendar before you go because national-team training camps and international regattas can close the course on short notice. The Welland Canoe Club and the South Niagara Rowing Club run year-round programming on the same water.

For casual flatwater paddling away from the regatta course, the Welland River through the city runs slow and warm, and Chippawa Creek Conservation Area on the river corridor west of the city offers small flatwater on the conservation area pond. May through October is the open-water window; the course freezes in winter.
