01 — Abstract

Thunder Bay sits at the head of Lake Superior at the mouth of the Kaministiquia River, on the rugged Canadian Shield north shore of the lake. Inside the city, the Blacksheep Mountain Bike Club builds and maintains the Trowbridge Forest network on the north end — 30 km of mountain-bike-optimized singletrack and 25 km of Nordic doubletrack across the Shuniah Mines silver-mining grounds, the Kinsmen Park skills hub, and the newer Masterplan gravity zone.

Up the Highway 61 corridor, Kamview Nordic Centre grooms 32+ km of classic and skate trails plus 6.9 km of lit night-ski trails open to 9 p.m. The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority manages 10 conservation areas across 2,500 hectares within an hour of the city, and Prince Arthur's Landing on the central waterfront anchors a 271-slip municipal marina alongside the Spirit Garden, Boulevard Lake's 5 km loop sits in a 650-acre municipal park, and Anemki Wajiw — Mount McKay — is the sacred mountain of Fort William First Nation immediately south of the city.

Walking & Strolling

Prince Arthur's Landing — the redeveloped central waterfront — anchors the Spirit Garden, splash pad, skating rink, public art, and concert pavilion alongside the 271-slip municipal marina, opening directly onto the City segment of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail. Boulevard Lake Park's 5 km paved loop circles a 650-acre municipal park with beaches and an 18-hole disc-golf course. Kaministiquia River Heritage Park adds a 550 m paved riverbank walkway with tugboat, sculpture, and railway exhibits, and the Terry Fox Memorial and Lookout sits 1.5 km east of Hodder Avenue on Highway 11/17 at the eastern edge of the city.

The newer Masterplan gravity zone adds Lift Access, Look Out!, Mesaround, The Vein, Magma Day, and Scary Canary on the downhill side.

Sailing & Boating

Prince Arthur's Landing Marina runs 271 slips on Lake Superior at the central waterfront, with a fixed May 15 – October 15 slip-rental season and the surrounding Marina Park grounds open year-round. The marina sits alongside the Spirit Garden and concert pavilion as the principal Lake Superior port-city sailing centre between Sault Ste. Marie and Duluth. Lake Superior holds cold all year — open-water windows are short and weather discipline matters.

Anemki Wajiw — Mount McKay — is the sacred mountain of Fort William First Nation, used for ceremonies, feasts, teachings, and the FWFN annual powwow; the eastern-plateau lookout sits at roughly 300 m elevation overlooking Thunder Bay and Lake Superior. Visitor access is governed by FWFN: field-trip access is administered through the FWFN Culture and Recreation department and sacred-site protocols apply around active ceremonies. On the central waterfront, the Spirit Garden at Prince Arthur's Landing is a permanent Indigenous-designed installation from the 2010–13 Marina Park redevelopment. Fort William First Nation is a Robinson-Superior Treaty signatory.
