Heritage & Culture.

Science North on the north shore of Ramsey Lake is Ontario's second-largest science centre, opened in 1984 in two snowflake-shaped buildings on the lake. Its earth-science campus, Dynamic Earth at the Big Nickel site, runs the "Going Underground" descent — roughly seven storeys into a former Inco demonstration drift — that interprets 140+ years of nickel mining beneath the city.

The Big Nickel itself, a 9 m / 30 ft replica of the 1951 Canadian nickel coin, has stood at the Dynamic Earth site since 1964.

01 — What to know

The brief.

Science North and Dynamic Earth are run by the same provincial agency and share a combined ticket. Science North on Ramsey Lake covers four floors of exhibits and an IMAX dome; Dynamic Earth, a 5-minute drive west off Big Nickel Mine Drive, covers the mining and impact-crater interpretation plus the surface plaza around the Big Nickel.

Going Underground operates year-round and is the most-visited single mine-tour interpretation in Ontario. Anderson Farm Museum (Conservation Sudbury, Lively, west side) and the Copper Cliff Museum carry community heritage from the amalgamated municipalities — Lively, Copper Cliff, and Walden — that joined the City of Greater Sudbury in 2001.

Bell Park's lakeside concert pavilion sits next door to Science North. Best season for full programming is May through October; both science venues stay open year-round.
