Heritage & Culture.

The St. Catharines Museum & Welland Canals Centre at Lock 3 is the city's museum on the present (fourth) Welland Canal.

Its observation deck looks down on Lock 3 as ocean ships transit between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie — Locks 1 and 2 sit further north along the canal toward the lake, and Locks 4 through 7 climb the Niagara Escarpment in Thorold. Above the Escarpment, Morningstar Mill at DeCew Falls is a late-19th-century working grist mill on Twelve Mile Creek operated by the City of St.

Catharines.

01 — What to know

The brief.

The Welland Canals Centre at Lock 3 is the year-round anchor — the observation deck is publicly accessible whenever ships are transiting (the navigation season on the canal runs roughly late March through late December). Morningstar Mill operates seasonally with volunteer staffing by the Friends of Morningstar Mill, typically May through October on weekends, with free admission.

On the Lake Ontario shore, Port Dalhousie is the original First Welland Canal terminus, with Lock 1 of the surviving Second and Third Welland Canals visible at the harbour, the 1898–1905 Lakeside Park carousel still operating in season, and the Port Dalhousie Range Front and Range Rear lighthouses on the pier. The Royal Canadian Henley Regatta has been held annually on Martindale Pond beside Port Dalhousie since 1903, on the 2,300 m international rowing course that also hosted the World Rowing Championships in 1970 and 1999.
