Paddling — Flatwater.
Highway 522 runs east from South River to the Kawawaymog (Round Lake) Access — Algonquin Provincial Park's western canoe-route entry. From the access dock, paddlers head into Tim River and North Tea Lake on the quieter western side of the Park's interior canoe-route system.
The road approach belongs to the village; the interior trips themselves are an Algonquin Provincial Park product, with Ontario Parks–issued interior camping permits and access fees.
The brief.
The Park interior side of the trip is a multi-day backcountry canoe-trip product, not a day-paddle. Ontario Parks issues interior camping permits for Algonquin's Kawawaymog Access; an access fee applies, and routes are first-come / advance-bookable through the Park's online reservation system.
The interior canoe season runs roughly May through October; black-fly and mosquito season runs late May through early July, which most experienced Algonquin paddlers factor into trip timing. Short of a Park trip, the South River itself flows west of the village toward the Lake Nipissing watershed, carrying small-stream paddling on its accessible reaches; FMZ 11 fishing rules apply on the South River and the connecting Almaguin Highlands lakes for paddlers who fish along the way.
