Heritage & Culture.
Sir John Johnson House National Historic Site stands on a hill over the Raisin River in Williamstown — a refined log-and-timber Loyalist farmhouse whose original five-bay structure was built between 1784 and 1792 on Sir John Johnson's St. Lawrence mill site, designed to encourage Loyalist settlement after the American Revolution.
A short walk down the village's heritage core, the Glengarry, Nor'Westers and Loyalist Museum has occupied an 1862 Georgian-style building since 1967.
The brief.
Both anchors sit in Williamstown on the Raisin River. Sir John Johnson House was declared a place of national historic significance in 1961 by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada and is one of the oldest standing buildings in Ontario; Parks Canada operates the site on a posted seasonal schedule.
The Glengarry, Nor'Westers and Loyalist Museum interprets the United Empire Loyalist migration to Glengarry County and the Glengarry partners of the North West Company — the connection between the Loyalist diaspora that founded Williamstown and the fur-trade partnership that ran the Montreal-based Nor'Wester operation. Both sites are typically open through the May-to-October visitor season.
