Swimming & Beach.
Port Hope has two municipal Lake Ontario beaches flanking the harbour at the mouth of the Ganaraska River. East Beach, at Mill Street South and Madison Street, has a sand bottom and a designated swim area with a playground and picnic site; West Beach, west of the harbour, runs cobble shoreline.
Both are tested regularly for water quality by the Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit.
The brief.
The municipal beach season runs the first Monday in May through the first Monday in October, with hours 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. East Beach is the swimming beach — sand bottom, designated swim area, playground, and picnic facilities.
West Beach is the cobble counterpart, described by the Municipality as having "the best stones for skipping" — better for shoreline walks and beach-day picnics than swimming. Both sit a short walk from the heritage downtown and the Waterfront Trail.
Lake Ontario at Port Hope has no surf or riptide; water temperature is at its warmest July through August.
