Seasonal Phenomena.
The Ganaraska Fishway at Corbett's Dam, on the west side of the dam at 4 McKibbon Street in Port Hope, is the principal viewing location for one of Ontario's most accessible large-scale salmon migrations. Each fall, Chinook and Coho push up from Lake Ontario into the Ganaraska River through the centre of the heritage downtown — 5,000 to 19,000 fish in a season, depending on water flow.
The brief.
The fall salmon run peaks mid-August through early October, with the largest fish typically arriving on the high-flow days after rain. The Ganaraska Fishway carries an underwater monitoring system operated by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry; fishing is not allowed at the fishway itself.
Pooling sites are visible in shallow water at several points along the downtown river corridor. Two trout windows complement the fall salmon run — late March through early May, and October through mid-December — with around 9,000 Rainbow, Steelhead, and Brown trout running the same route.
River Watch Daily, run through the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority, posts live fishway activity for trip planning.
