The Comfort Maple at 636 Metler Road in North Pelham is a destination walk in itself — a short path from a small NPCA parking area to a fenced-off sugar maple widely held to be one of the oldest in Canada. Inside Short Hills Provincial Park, the Palaeozoic Path is a hard-surface barrier-free loop suitable for wheelchairs and strollers; the Steve Bauer Trail's rail-trail section is walkable for non-cyclists, running south through Fonthill toward Welland.
The brief.
The Comfort Maple visit is short — minutes to walk in from the parking area to the protective fencing perimeter; access is free and year-round, and the NPCA stewards the site. The Palaeozoic Path is the only barrier-free route inside Short Hills and is the easiest entry point for visitors who can't manage uneven terrain.
The Steve Bauer Trail rail-trail follows the former Niagara, St. Catharines and Toronto commuter line and is walkable as well as cyclable; the surface combines paved and gravel sections through suburban Fonthill and the wooded greenway south of Port Robinson Road.
Pelham Town Square anchors the village heritage walk through the Fonthill core on the Fonthill Kame summit. May through October is the easiest window; the Comfort Maple and Steve Bauer Trail stay accessible into shoulder season.
