Heritage & Culture.
Parkwood Estate, the 55-room Colonel R. S.
McLaughlin home built between 1915 and 1917 by the Toronto firm Darling and Pearson, was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1989; its formal gardens include the Italian, Sunken, Sundial, New Formal, and Japanese gardens. Together with the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, the Canadian Automotive Museum, and the Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens — connected to Parkwood by the Oshawa Valley Creek trail — they form a coherent heritage corridor along Oshawa Creek.
The brief.
Parkwood Estate is privately stewarded under heritage operation; visitor admission applies and hours are seasonal — check the estate's site for current information. The Robert McLaughlin Gallery downtown holds a Canadian modern and contemporary collection of more than 4,500 works and the Thomas Bouckley Collection of over 3,000 historical photographs of Oshawa and Durham Region.
The Canadian Automotive Museum, established in 1962, is housed in a 25,000 square-foot 1920s former Ontario Motor Sales building downtown and holds the country's most comprehensive Canadian automotive history collection. The Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens are municipally managed and connect to Parkwood's gardens via the Oshawa Valley Creek trail.
May through October is the easiest window for Parkwood's gardens and outdoor heritage walking; the indoor museums (RMG, CAM) operate year-round.
