Old Oakville is one of Ontario's earliest Heritage Conservation Districts — anchored on Lakeshore Road East, Navy Street, and Trafalgar Road around Oakville Harbour at the mouth of Sixteen Mile Creek. Erchless Estate at 8 Navy Street, the 1856 Chisholm family estate on the west bank of the creek, operates as the Oakville Museum.
Bronte is a separately designated HCD ringing Bronte Harbour at the mouth of Bronte Creek.
The brief.
The Old Oakville HCD covers the central pre-Confederation street grid around Oakville Harbour — Erchless Estate, the Oakville Museum, Tannery Park, and the Lakeshore Road East commercial heritage. Bronte HCD covers the harbour village west of central Oakville — Bronte Road, Lakeshore Road West, and the harbour basin.
Oakville Galleries operates two locations — Centennial Square downtown and Gairloch Gardens on the lakeshore. Inside Bronte Creek Provincial Park, the 1899 Spruce Lane Farm runs interpretive programming on the homestead and outbuildings, and Maple Lane sugar shack programming runs in the spring sap-run window.
Oakville Museum and Spruce Lane Farm run full-season May–October programming; HCD walking is year-round.
