Nature & Discovery.
The Wawanosh Nature Centre at 38854 Nature Centre Road is the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority's interpretive site for the watershed — set on Belgrave Creek and the Maitland River with free admission, free parking, and year-round access. Three habitat types meet on the property: a creek corridor along Belgrave, the Maitland River frontage to the west, and mixed forest and edge habitat through the conservation area trails.
The brief.
The Wawanosh Nature Centre is the township's primary nature-interpretation venue — MVCA staff run education and interpretive programming, and the site supports birdwatching, dog walking, hiking, fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Best birding is May through September for spring migrants and breeding species; the Wingham Community Trail's Maitland River crossing and Turnberry Flood Plain Conservation Area loop are also documented among Huron County birding hotspots and add a riverine and floodplain component.
The conservation area's free admission and year-round opening hours make it the easiest entry point for nature programming in the township.
