Cycling.

The 5.5 km Iron Horse Trail runs on a former Grand River Railway corridor as part of the Trans Canada Trail, connecting downtown Kitchener to Uptown Waterloo and forming the spine of the city's cycling network. The Walter Bean Grand River Trail layers more than 25 km of multi-use riverside loop along the Grand through the east side, and the 45 km Kissing Bridge Trailway carries riders north through rural Woolwich to the West Montrose Covered Bridge — built 1880–1881, the only remaining historic covered bridge in Ontario.

Cycling in Kitchener
01 — What to know

The brief.

This is rail-trail and urban-spine cycling first — flat, paved or stone-dust, family-friendly more than fitness terrain — with rural rail-trail extensions north into Mennonite country. Best window is April through October on the connected network; the Iron Horse stays viable for commuter riding outside that range when the city clears it.

Public access is unticketed — no permit, no fee — and ION light rail with bike capacity links the southern and northern ends of the in-city network. The Schneider Creek / Homer Watson gravel corridor adds 11 km of gravel south to Blair for riders who want a longer day.

Mountain biking is a separate story (The Hydrocut, ~35 km of singletrack closer to Waterloo) — covered on the hub page rather than here.
