Heritage & Culture.

On 27 June 2007, UNESCO inscribed the Rideau Canal and Kingston Fortifications as Ontario's only World Heritage Site. The Kingston half of the inscription includes five 19th-century fortifications inside the city — Fort Henry NHS on Point Henry, Fort Frederick at the Royal Military College, Cathcart Tower on Cedar Island, Shoal Tower in the downtown harbour basin, and Murney Tower NHS at Macdonald Park — plus the four 1832 limestone locks at Kingston Mills.

Heritage & Culture in Kingston
01 — What to know

The brief.

Most of the heritage cluster sits on or just off the downtown waterfront and is walkable from Confederation Park and the Waterfront Pathway. Fort Henry NHS is the largest single site and runs full summer programming; Murney Tower Museum is the only Martello in Kingston open to the public, operated by the Kingston Historical Society in partnership with Parks Canada and open seasonally (typically late May through Labour Day, daily 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.).

Bellevue House National Historic Site, Sir John A. Macdonald's restored Italianate villa, sits a short distance west of downtown.

Kingston Mills lockstation is a short drive north on the Cataraqui River — the four 1832 limestone locks plus the 1832 defensive blockhouse mark the canal's southern terminus. Kingston City Hall (1844) anchors the limestone old-town core at Confederation Park.
