Heritage & Culture.
The Kincardine Lighthouse stands at the mouth of the Penetangore River, built in 1881 to service local fishing and salt shipping and still the only "downtown" lighthouse on the Bruce County coast. Every summer night except Saturday from July 1 through August 31, the Phantom Piper plays a sunset bagpipe lament from the tower — a tradition continuous since 1996.
Saturdays are the Pipe Band's parade night.
The brief.
The lighthouse and marine museum are open during the summer season, with a 69-step climb to the top of the tower. The Phantom Piper performs at sunset July 1 through August 31 every evening except Saturday; Saturdays are reserved for the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band Parade, which has marched from the Kincardine Legion up Queen Street to Victoria Park since 1972.
The Kincardine Scottish Festival and Highland Games runs annually with the Parade of the Clans through downtown and more than 30 pipe bands competing across the weekend. The lighthouse, boardwalk, and Victoria Park parade route all sit within easy walking distance in the downtown core.
