Hiking.
The Grand Valley Trail runs roughly 280 kilometres along the Heritage River from Lake Erie to the Dundalk highlands, maintained by the Grand Valley Trails Association as a continuous river-corridor route. Inside the GRCA conservation areas, Elora Gorge carries trails along 22-metre limestone cliffs above the river, and Rockwood on the Eramosa tributary holds glacial potholes and small caves that don't appear elsewhere on the watershed.
The brief.
The GVT is sectioned into eleven club-maintained segments and best paddled in sections rather than thru-hiked. Inside the GRCA conservation areas, day-use fees apply at most gates and seasonal hours change between summer and shoulder season — Elora Gorge, Rockwood, and Pinehurst Lake follow the GRCA conservation-area schedule and rules, and most are road-accessible from Highway 6, Highway 7, and the 401 corridor.
May through October is the comfortable hiking window; lower elevations remain walkable through winter at most areas. Apps' Mill on the lower Grand near Brantford carries Carolinian-belt forest trails best in spring and fall.
