Heritage & Culture.

The Square is the working centre of Goderich — an octagonal radial plaza laid out in the 1827–1829 Canada Company surveys overseen by John Galt. The Huron County Courthouse sits at the centre, and downtown's heritage commercial fabric is arranged around the eight-sided plan.

A short walk west, the 1847 Goderich Lighthouse stands above the harbour at the bluff edge, with the Tiger Dunlop Tomb on the bluff above the Maitland River north of town.

01 — What to know

The brief.

The heritage cluster is compact and walkable. The Square anchors downtown; the Huron County Museum and the Historic Gaol sit a short walk from the central plaza, and the Lighthouse and harbour boardwalk are walkable west of The Square.

Most heritage stops are accessible year-round; the museum and gaol run on seasonal hours per Huron County. The Tiger Dunlop Tomb is reached on the Maitland Trail / Tiger Dunlop section above the river.

The Compass Minerals (Sifto) Goderich salt mine is visible from the harbour gates but is an active industrial site and not open for public tours.
