Freshwater Fishing.

The Maitland River carries fall Chinook and rainbow-trout / steelhead runs in season — one of the productive southwestern-Ontario tributaries to Lake Huron. From the Goderich harbour pier, Lake Huron east-shore casting picks up the same species in the open lake during shore-season windows.

Both fall under Ontario Fisheries Management Zone 13, set by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Freshwater Fishing in Goderich
01 — What to know

The brief.

Best windows are September through November for Chinook salmon, October through April for steelhead (rainbow trout), and spring and fall for brown trout. The Maitland follows FMZ 13 rules, including sanctuary closures on tributaries during salmonid spawning — read the current MNRF FMZ 13 summary before fishing.

Fly-fishing on the Maitland is the dominant technique through the gorge sections; the harbour pier supports shore casting. Goderich is downstream-anchor for the Maitland; upstream sections (Wingham, Listowel) are out of Goderich's strict scope.

Standard Ontario Outdoors Card and provincial licence apply.
