Freshwater Fishing.
The Niagara River through Fort Erie and the Lake Erie waters off Crystal Beach and Point Abino sit inside Ontario's Fisheries Management Zone 19, a multi-species warmwater and coldwater fishery that runs through one of the most-fished corners of the Great Lakes. Smallmouth bass, walleye, lake trout, steelhead, and king salmon move through this stretch on different seasonal calendars.
The brief.
An Ontario fishing licence is required and FMZ 19 seasons and limits apply — open seasons and possession limits vary by species, so consult the current Ontario Fishing Regulations Summary before going out. Fort Erie's named public access on the Niagara River is the Mather Park pier near the Peace Bridge; the Niagara Parkway shoreline north of town adds shoreline access points.
Small-craft and charter access expands the offer to the upper Niagara River and Lake Erie open-water — the Niagara River charter fleet runs out of Fort Erie and Buffalo. The river current immediately downstream of Lake Erie is fast and not appropriate for casual paddling; powerboat handling is the norm.
Smallmouth bass and walleye drive the summer season; steelhead and king salmon run in fall, with steelhead also fishable into winter and spring on the lower river. Best open-water window is April through November.
