Walking & Strolling.
Spencer Smith Park puts you at the edge of Lake Ontario in downtown Burlington, with the 137-metre Brant Street Pier walking out over open water. From there the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail rolls roughly 10 km off-road along the Beach Strip, past Beachway Park, over the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge, into Hamilton's Confederation Beach Park.
The brief.
Spencer Smith Park (1400 Lakeshore Road) is the downtown waterfront anchor — it hosts Sound of Music, Canada's Largest Ribfest, and the Burlington Beer Festival on summer weekends, so plan around the festival schedule for quieter walks. The Waterfront Trail forks west of Spencer Smith Park at Maple Avenue: the south leg follows the Beach Strip across the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge to Hamilton; the north leg traces North Shore Boulevard around Burlington Bay through Aldershot.
LaSalle Park (50 North Shore Blvd) gives a longer Burlington-Bay-side walk with marina views. Inland, the Royal Botanical Gardens cultivated grounds — Hendrie Park (rose collection), the RBG Centre, and Laking Garden (iris and peony collections) — are paid-admission; the connecting Hendrie Valley nature sanctuary along Grindstone Creek is free.
