Heritage & Culture.
The Bell Homestead National Historic Site is the c. 1858 farmhouse on Tutela Heights where Alexander Graham Bell conceived the telephone in July 1874 — the Canadian birthplace of the telephone, designated NHS in 1996 and operated as a museum by the City of Brantford. A few kilometres south, Her Majesty's Royal Chapel of the Mohawks has stood since 1785 as the oldest surviving Protestant church in Ontario.
The brief.
The Bell Homestead and Mohawk Chapel sit on opposite sides of the Grand River and are typically visited as a pair. Bell Homestead operates year-round with reduced winter hours; the residence and grounds may be visited and museum programming runs seasonally.
Mohawk Chapel is open daily May through Thanksgiving weekend and is closed November through April; it is stewarded by Six Nations and the Anglican Diocese of Huron in partnership. Brant County Museum and Archives covers regional history, and the Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant occupies a heritage estate on the Grand River.
Together the four sites are walkable or short-drive within the city; allow most of a day for the pair of NHS sites alone.
