01 — What to know

The brief.

The Frost Centre name carries two meanings here, and they sit on opposite sides of Highway 35. The closed 1921–2004 educational facility on St.

Nora Lake is a heritage site, not a public visitor centre today. The active Frost Centre canoe-route management area — 26,500 ha of Crown land with 60+ shield lakes — is what's open and used.

Birding is shield-species heavy: common loon and common merganser on the lakes, raptors and warblers through the mixed-hardwood forest and wetlands. Day-use at Oxtongue River-Ragged Falls runs May 8 – October 18, 2026; the Frost Centre canoe-route interior is reachable year-round through HHWT permits.
